The 2026 edition of the Cannes Film Festival has revealed a Competition lineup dominated by internationally acclaimed auteurs, with filmmakers such as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Asghar Farhadi, Pedro Almodóvar and Pawel Pawlikowski set to premiere new works on the Croisette.

This year’s Competition leans heavily toward global independent cinema, with minimal presence from major U.S. studios. Among the standout titles is Sheep in the Box, marking Kore-eda’s return to Cannes following his Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters. Known for his intimate family dramas, Kore-eda’s latest reportedly explores artificial intelligence within a domestic setting.
