New Delhi: Gaganpreet Makkad, accused in the BMW accident that claimed the life of Navjot Singh, deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, on Tuesday filed a bail application in a Delhi court, claiming there was no intent or negligence on her part. The bail hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.Makkad’s plea contended that custodial interrogation is unnecessary as she has cooperated fully with the investigation, does not pose a flight risk, and is unlikely to tamper with evidence.The court issued a notice to the prosecution and directed Tihar authorities to ensure Makkad receives medical care. She was sent to two-day judicial custody Monday after being arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Her blood samples tested negative for alcohol, police said.Meanwhile, following a post-mortem at a west Delhi hospital, Singh’s body was on Tuesday taken to the hospital in Dwarka where his wife, Sandeep Kaur, is currently admitted. Two stretchers were placed side by side, one carrying Singh, the other for his wife. As she was shown his body one last time, Kaur broke down in tears, crying uncontrollably.Police inquiry revealed Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, where the injured couple were taken to by Makkad, is owned by her relatives. According to police sources, her father is related to one of the hospital owners, whose children manage the facility.Makkad’s husband Parikshit told police he didn’t know how the incident occurred. He said his wife informed him she was taking the injured to a hospital, after which he informed his father-in-law and took a cab and left. Police will corroborate his statement.Singh (57), a resident of Hari Nagar, was killed and his wife seriously injured in an accident on Ring Road near Delhi Cantt Metro Station while returning home from a gurudwara on Sunday. They were taken by Makkad to a small facility in GTB Nagar, 22km from the accident spot, instead of one nearby.
