BMC begins covering dadar kabutarkhana to enforce pigeon feeding ban

Mumbai: On Saturday evening, the BMC’s G North ward office started the process to completely cover up the Dadar Kabutarkhana. Bamboos and CCTVs were placed along the entire area where pigeon feeding was rampant for several decades. This action followed an attempt by BMC’s G North ward officials on Friday to cover the Kabutarkhana at Dadar, which was halted after local residents requested time to relocate sick pigeons still present at the site. A civic official stated that the action was in compliance with Bombay High Court directions to prevent further pigeon feeding. “We went to cover the structure to enforce the ban, as per court orders. However, on Saturday, preliminary work began to cover up the Kabutarkhana,” the official said.Residents, however, urged the BMC to delay the cover-up, stating that several ill pigeons unable to fly needed to be shifted first. Just last week, the Bombay High Court directed the BMC to register FIRs against those found feeding pigeons at Kabutarkhana and other public spaces, in violation of the ban.
