Beed man found dead, kin claim he ended life because of OBC quota issue in Maharashtra

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A 48-year-old daily-wage worker was found dead in his house in Beed district on Saturday night. His family members told reporters on Sunday that the man took the extreme step because he feared the effect of the Sept 2 Maratha quota govt resolution on OBC reservation.Gorakh Devadkar, a resident of Nathapur, was found hanging from a metal rod in his house. He is survived by his wife and five daughters, two of them unmarried. Manisha, the deceased man’s daughter, said her father was upset with the Maratha community’s encroachment on the OBC reservation. “I, along with my younger sister, am preparing for police recruitment. So far, I have had two unsuccessful attempts. My father was worried that I may not get selected anymore as the OBC quota has shrunk further now,” she told reporters.Pimpalner police said no note was recovered, but they are investigating the suicide claim. Sub-inspector Atmaram Garje said, “As per the family’s statement, Devadkar took the extreme step as he was upset about his daughters not getting police jobs due to the alleged split in the OBC quota. The post-mortem was performed, and the body was handed over to the family.” The process of registering a case of accidental death was still on late on Sunday evening.On Sept 11, Bharat Karad, a 35-year-old from Renapur taluka of Latur district, had allegedly jumped into the Manjra river to protest the Maratha quota GR. As per the note he left behind, Karad took the extreme step due to the “snatching of OBC reservation” leading to a bleak future for the next generation.OBC activist Balasaheb Sanap, who visited the bereaved Devadkar family, said it was said that poor members of his community were ending their lives due to reservation issues. “While appeasing the Maratha community, state govt has failed to protect the interests of the OBC community. State govt is responsible for these deaths and must take corrective measures at the earliest by protecting OBC reservation,” Sanap, head of the social organisation Bhagwan Mahasangh, said.
