The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated annually on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Sawan month. However, if Bhadra occurs on this day, it is considered inauspicious to tie Rakhi. In Hindu tradition, performing any auspicious ritual during Bhadra is believed to bring unfavourable results. Over the past two years, Bhadra’s presence on Raksha Bandhan has altered the timing of the celebrations.
Raksha Bandhan 2025 Date
According to Kashi-based astrologer Chakrapani Bhatt, the full moon (Purnima) of Sawan falls on Saturday, August 9. Therefore, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on this day. As per the Panchang, the Sawan Purnima Tithi will begin at 2:12 PM on August 8 and end at 1:24 PM on August 9.
The most common question this year is whether Bhadra will coincide with Raksha Bandhan. According to the Panchang, Bhadra will begin on August 8 at 2:12 PM and last until 1:52 AM on August 9. This is the Bhadra of Patal Lok (underworld), not the earthly or heavenly realm. Since sunrise on August 9 marks the main celebration of Raksha Bandhan and Bhadra ends before sunrise, the day will be Bhadra-free. Therefore, the festival can be celebrated without any concern this year.
Impact Of Celebrating Rakhi During Bhadra
Tying Rakhi during Bhadra, especially when Bhadra is active in the earthly or underworld realm, is considered inauspicious. Any auspicious act performed during this time may face obstacles and disruptions. Scriptures suggest that tying Rakhi during Bhadracould negatively impact the well-being of the brother. However, if Bhadra belongs to the heavenly realm, tying Rakhi is not considered harmful.
Auspicious Time For Rakhi 2025
On August 9, 2025, the auspicious time to tie Rakhi is from 5:47 AM to 1:24 PM. This gives a window of 7 hours and 37 minutes for celebrations. However, it is advised to avoid the Rahukaal, which on this day will be from 9:07 AM to 10:47 AM.
