NEW DELHI: In a suspected case of revenge murder, a 29-year-old man was allegedly shot near his family home in south Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar on Monday evening. Nikhil Naagar was going to his nearby chicken shop in Madangir around 8pm when the attack took place. According to locals, two persons arrived near a temple on a motorcycle. While one of them stationed the bike at a short distance, the other approached Naagar and allegedly opened fire, shooting four-five rounds. Naagar was hit in the back of his neck and the attackers fled. Locals took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Naagar was an accused in a 2021 murder case in which a local, 19-year-old Kunal, was allegedly stabbed to death near the same spot following a dispute over a common woman friend of Naagar’s associate, Gaurav. The case is under trial. His uncle, Rajesh Naagar (50), said, “After being released on bail around a year ago, he had shifted to a rented accommodation nearby and had taken up a job at a private company.” After his father died in Jan due to a lung infection, he began spending more time at the family’s chicken shop, the uncle added. Naagar had also lost his mother. Family members suspect the involvement of three persons who wanted to take revenge for Kunal’s death. The shooting appeared to be “pre-planned”, his uncle said. Relatives and locals said one person might have carried out a recce earlier and identified him during the attack.While the victim’s 35-year-old sister, Nisha, is married and stays in Shakarpur, another sister, 30-year-old Naina, lives at the family home and runs tuition classes for schoolchildren. His 92-year-old grandmother, Ram Devi, and other relatives also live on different floors of the same house. Premlal Naagar (55), another uncle, said, “Nisha was to get married in Jan, but the wedding was postponed to April after their father’s death. Now we are uncertain about what will happen.” His grandmother and sister have been told that he is undergoing treatment. Police said all angles, including personal enmity, were being investigated. A case has been registered and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined to identify the accused.
