Court grants Hany Babu permission to travel to Kerala to visit ailing mother and seek treatment

Mumbai: A special court this week granted permission to Professor Hany Babu, an accused in the Elgar Parishad case, to travel to his hometown in Kerala to visit his 80-year-old ailing mother and seek medical treatment for gallbladder stones. While the academic sought a two-month leave from the court’s jurisdiction, the court restricted the period to ensure compliance with bail conditions previously set by the Bombay high court. Babu, who was arrested in April 2020 and spent over 5 years in custody before being granted bail in December 2025, moved the application citing the need to meet his 80-year-old mother and undergo treatment for gallstones.“I hold that, to go and meet his age old mother is just consideration that too, after near about 6 good long years, entitle the accused to go to visit and stay with her for few days,” the Judge remarked in the order. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) strongly opposed the plea, arguing that the offences are serious and that Babu could seek medical treatment in Mumbai. The agency further contended that no medical certificates were provided regarding his mother’s health and expressed concern that he might engage in “unlawful conspiracy” if allowed to leave.
