MUMBAI: At least one person died and four others were injured after a portion of an under-construction metro rail pillar collapsed onto an autorickshaw, SUV in Mulund West on Saturday afternoon, officials said. The incident was reported around 12.20 pm near the Johnson & Johnson company on LBS Road. According to preliminary information received by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), a cement segment of the pillar gave way during ongoing work and fell directly onto the passing rickshaw.The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav. The three injured persons are Rajkumar Yadav (45), Mahendra Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40). Rajkumar Yadav has been admitted to the ICU and his condition is said to be critical. The condition of the other two is stable. Mayor Ritu Tawde said the parapet segment had been placed yesterday. “There definitely seems to be negligence. If the work was done recently, the stretch should have been barricaded,” she said. The victims have been admitted to Upasana Multispeciality Hospital.

Fire brigade personnel, police teams, metro staff, ward officials and 108 ambulance service personnel rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Authorities cordoned off the area, and traffic movement on the busy LBS Road stretch was affected for some time.

The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained and a detailed inquiry is expected to follow.
