Pune: The Airport police arrested two men for snatching a gold chain worth Rs 2.5 lakh from a woman (58) around 6.15pm on Monday on the Pune-Nagar road at Kharadi.The accused were identified as Pankaj Diwate (20) and Ganesh Girhe (22), both residents of Beed. The woman and her husband, both of them are retired police constable, were on their routine evening walk when the duo, on a motorcycle, snatched the woman’s chain.
According to the police, the couple, along with their children, stays at Kharadi.Sub inspector Akshay Sonawane of the Airport police said, “The retired constable was alert while walking. He retired about a year ago. The motorcycle-borne men came from behind and snatched the gold chain from his wife. Before the motorcycle rider could accelerate, the retired constable grabbed the handle of the motorcycle. He used all his force and pulled down the motorcycle. The duo fell on the road and within a few moments, passers-by halted and called the police.“Sonawane said, “We seized the motorcycle and recovered the gold chain.”“Diwate and Girhe are unemployed. They travelled all the way to Pune from Beed on their motorcycle to execute the crime. They stayed at a small lodge in Kesnand. It was their first attempt. The duo does not have previous crimes registered against their names,” he said.
