12-year-old pillion rider crushed to death by container truck as biker brakes when police vehicle comes from wrong direction; Mumbai police book both drivers

Mumbai: A 12-year-old pillion rider fell off the bike and got crushed under the wheels of a container truck after her father was forced to apply sudden brakes when a police vehicle came from the wrong direction near Reay Road on Tuesday. Sewri police have registered a case against both the vehicle drivers for causing death by negligence and dangerous driving under the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act.The incident took place at 11.30am on BPT road under Eastern Freeway when Dongri resident Abdul Wahid Vora (42), who is a tuition teacher, and his daughter Ayat, a class V student, were on their way to meet relatives in Kurla. “Vora, who was wearing a helmet, was riding next to the container truck in the northbound carriageway. Suddenly, an SUV, driven by Sharad Mukunde (41) of the motor transport department which comes under Mumbai Police, came in front of him from the opposite direction. Vora panicked and applied brakes. Due to the sudden jerk, his daughter, who was riding pillion, fell on the road and was run over by the rear tyres of the container truck,” said a police officer. Other motorists alerted Sewri police about the mishap and they arrived at the spot. They rushed Ayat to KEM Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police seized the container truck and the SUV and detained the two drivers. “Mukunde and an officer were heading to south Mumbai. Since there was a traffic jam, Mukunde drove on the wrong side of the road, which caused the accident,” the officer said. “The container truck, which came from Pune, was carrying an export consignment of newly manufactured cars to a cargo ship.” Police said blood examination tests confirmed that the two drivers were not drunk at the time of the incident.
