How The Legend Is Told In The Clip
The video begins with a woman narrating the story in a calm but intense tone. She starts by asking, “Do you know how Mumbadevi came to Mumbai?” She then explains that before Mumbai existed, this land was just a dangerous coastline ruled by the ocean. She describes how the sea controlled life, deciding who would survive and who would disappear. Fishing communities like the Kolis and Somvanshi Kshatriyas lived along the shore, constantly at risk every time they went out to fish.
She then introduces the demon Mumbarka, saying he spread fear, caused violent waves, destroyed boats, and brought hunger and illness to the people. The visuals show stormy waters, broken nets, and worried villagers praying. With no weapons or power to fight back, the people called upon the Goddess Amba for protection.
According to the legend, the Goddess appeared as Mumbadevi with eight arms and powerful weapons. The clip shows a fierce divine figure standing between land and sea. The narrator describes a dramatic battle between Mumbadevi and Mumbarka, with shaking land and rising waves. When Mumbarka was defeated, he begged for mercy and asked that his name not be erased. The Goddess agreed, and thus her name became Mumbadevi.
After this, the video shows calm seas, happy fishermen, and thriving settlements, symbolising peace and safety. The narrator explains that people began calling her Mumba Ai, and over time, the land she protected came to be known as Mumbai. The clip ends with the message that Mumbai’s name carries the memory of this divine battle.
