Ghaziabad man performs ‘wazu’ at Golden Temple, arrested

Ghaziabad/Amritsar: Ghaziabad police on Saturday took into custody a man accused of performing ‘wazu’ inside the sacred pond of Golden Temple in Amritsar 11 days ago, and handed him over to Punjab Police.The arrest of Subhan Rangrez was made following two police complaints filed on the same day — by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Amritsar and by a group of Nihangs who confronted him at his home in Ghaziabad .A video uploaded on the social media handle of Akali Jasvinder Singh appears to show a man slapping a person believed to be Subhan, although this could not be independently confirmed. The caption with this video says in Punjabi: “Whoever has dared challenge the Sikh community is brought to justice).” In another video, a man says that a formal complaint was lodged at Ankur Vihar police station in Ghaziabad.Subhan’s arrest was filmed as well. ACP-Ankur Vihar Gyan Prakash Rai said that a group of people went to Subhan’s residence, leading to an altercation.Police intervened, arrested him, filed a challan, and sent him to judicial custody, he said. Both the man who slapped Subhan and the cameraperson were later shown apologising.Police investigations in both Ghaziabad and Punjab are underway, officers said.
