Pune: In a major push towards renewable energy, state water resources minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil announced on Friday that Maharashtra will implement floating solar projects on dam reservoirs across the Krishna and Godavari basins. The initiative aims to bolster power generation while promoting green energy to safeguard the environment. Speaking at a seminar in Pune titled “Consultation on Leveraging Irrigation Infrastructure for Development of Green Energy in the State,” the minister outlined the strategic advantages of utilising the state’s massive water bodies for solar energy. “If we think innovatively, dams can serve purposes far beyond mere water supply. These reservoirs can play a pivotal role in helping the state achieve energy security,” Vikhe Patil said. The minister noted that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the water resources department to expedite floating solar initiatives. “Our department has decided to prioritise the Krishna and Godavari basins for these installations. Since the panels will be placed on the water, the state government will not need to acquire additional land — a move that significantly reduces project lead times and costs. The power generated will be dedicated to meeting the electricity requirements of the farming community,” he added. To ensure financial viability and technical excellence, department officials have suggested a public-private partnership (PPP) model for the rollout. This approach is expected to attract significant foreign investment and global expertise in renewable technology. Beyond power generation, the project offers a crucial environmental benefit: “Since these floating panels cover the water surface, they will significantly reduce evaporation. The water saved in this process can then be diverted for additional agricultural use,” the minister said.
