Pune: A 68-year-old retired bank officer lost Rs5.63 crore to cybercrooks in an online share trading fraud between June 2022 and Aug 2025, after they promised him good returns on investments in stock markets. The retired officer, a resident of Karvenagar, on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police. He came into contact with crooks in 2022 through a social media platform, an officer from the Pune cyber police said.
“The criminals offered him good returns on investments in share trading through their firm. They also told him to download an app to transfer money and monitor his profit,” the officer said.He said the elderly man transferred small amounts to different bank account numbers provided to him at the outset. The crooks initially transferred the profit amount to his account allegedly to gain his confidence. “Therafafter, the retired officer started transferring bigger amounts to the crooks’ bank accounts. He also saw in the app that he was earning a good profit on his investments,” the officer said.He said when the elderly man tried to withdraw his money, the crooks cited some reasons and made him transfer more cash. “To get back his invested money and the profit amount, the retired officer kept transferring money to the bank accounts of the criminals,” the officer said.He said the elderly man transferred a total of Rs5.63 crore to the crooks between July 2022 and Sept last year. “A case was registered with us on Tuesday. We will write to the victim’s bank to get the details of the transactions made through his accounts,” he said.
