NEW DELHI: Kamala Nehru College of the University of Delhi on Thursday commemorated the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram with a programme held on its campus in New Delhi.The event was attended by Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh as the chief guest, along with Dean of Colleges Prof Balaram Pani, Registrar Dr Vikas Gupta and Chairperson of the college’s Governing Body Prof Manoj Prasad.
The programme began with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp and a Saraswati Vandana presented by the college’s Indian Music Society. A floral tribute was paid to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, who authored Vande Mataram. This was followed by the rendition of the Delhi University Kulgeet.Addressing the gathering, Principal Prof Pavitra Bhardwaj said the commemoration was intended to reflect India’s cultural heritage and the continuing relevance of Vande Mataram. She referred to the college’s establishment in 1964 with a focus on women’s education and said the institution remained committed to values of civic responsibility and inclusive nationalism.Students, faculty members and staff later joined in a collective singing of Vande Mataram. Prof Singh, in his address, spoke about the historical journey of the song and its role during different phases of India’s national movement. He said the significance of Vande Mataram lay not only in its recital but also in translating its spirit into responsible action. He also urged students to preserve institutional and cultural memory.The Vice-Chancellor referred to lesser-known figures of the freedom movement, including Shyamji Krishna Verma, and highlighted the importance of acknowledging such contributions. He also linked national consciousness with contemporary challenges and responsibilities, particularly those facing the youth.The programme included the administration of the Swadeshi Sankalp Shapath, reaffirming commitment to national values and self-reliance. It concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Pooja, IQAC Coordinator, followed by the National Anthem. A screening of the film Anand Math was also organised as part of the event.
