New Delhi: A 73-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a crane that crushed her when she was crossing a road in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka on Tuesday afternoon. Meena Gupta, a resident of Mohan Garden, was on her way to meet her sons, who live in Dwarka. Police got a PCR call around 12pm at the Dwarka North police station. The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital by PCR staff. The doctors there declared her brought dead. A case was registered at Dwarka north police station. Local people told police that Gupta tried to signal the driver to stop, but the crane allegedly did not slow down. Her skull was crushed under the weight of the crane, leading to her death on the spot. Gupta is survived by her husband, Satyaprakash Gupta (75), a property dealer, and their children. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary less than a month ago. Her son, Manoj Gupta (49), a businessman, described her as the backbone of the family. “She was our family’s pillar. My father is diabetic, but she was very fit and took complete care of him. All they had was each other,” he said. He added that despite her age, Gupta was independent and active. “She would often go out on her own. It was nothing unusual for her,” he said. Police said the driver of the crane was arrested on the spot. He was later released on bail.
