5 crore marked to fix traffic congestion on key stretches

New Delhi: Public Works Department has allocated Rs 5 crore to install Jersey barriers on several key congestion-prone stretches in west Delhi to curb accidents and regulate traffic movement. The precast reinforced cement concrete barriers are meant to physically separate traffic streams, discouraging dangerous practices such as wrong-side driving, illegal U-turns and abrupt lane changes —violations frequently blamed for crashes and congestion.According to officials, the barriers will be installed along a mix of arterial roads and busy internal stretches, including Gurudwara Road, BA-BB Block Road, B2 Block Sabzi Mandi Road, Prem Nagar Gurudwara Road, Bhai Kanheya Ji Marg (ITI Road), Dr Kundan Lal Marg and Maya Puri Road from Subhash Nagar Crossing to Rajouri Apartments. Other locations include Ayodhya Prasad Chopra Marg, Vedic Marg, Sardar Kulwant Singh Sethi Marg, internal roads of Subhash Nagar and DA-1 to DB-1 stretch in Hari Nagar.Officials said the emphasis was on physical traffic control rather than enforcement alone. By blocking unauthorised crossings and turns, the barriers are expected to enforce lane discipline even when traffic cops are not present and also protect pedestrians, particularly in market areas and residential neighbourhoods where vehicles often spill onto footpaths. On high-traffic corridors such as Maya Puri Road and Gurudwara Road, officials believe the move will help streamline traffic flow during peak hours by preventing haphazard merging and last-minute manoeuvres that trigger bottlenecks.
