Ahead of Pune civic polls, close watch on parties & candidates to check Makar Sankranti gifts

Pune: The civic administration’s preparations for the Jan 15 polling are in full swing. Voting for Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be held at 4,011 polling stations spread across 41 wards. Additional municipal commissioner Omprakash Divte said poll campaign would end at 5.30pm on Jan 13. As Makar Sankranti is on Jan 14, a close watch will be kept on distribution of any gifts or material among citizens by candidates or political parties, the official said. The State Election Commission has issued instructions to all political parties and candidates not to distribute any gift among citizens.The administration has launched a dedicated web-based app for voters to search their names and polling stations. The link is available on the PMC’s website. An official on Friday said the civic administration would also distribute voters’ slips. The PMC’s electoral list has 35.51 lakh voters.Altogether 1,155 candidates are in the fray from 41 wards, of whom two won the election unopposed from the Suncity-Manikbaug ward in the Sinhagad Road area. Over 26,000 staff will be involved in the polling work, while 4,100 police personnel will be deployed at the polling stations. Over 14,500 ballot units are available for voting. Of the 4,011 polling stations, the administration has tagged 906 in the “sensitive polling station” category. The official said all the sensitive polling stations would be under a close watch of the administration.
