25-year-old road accident victim’s lungs, liver save two patients in Pune | Pune News

Pune: The untimely death of a 25-year-old BHMS student in a Jalna two-wheeler accident on Dec 29, 2025, broke his family’s heart, but they gathered the strength to consent to organ donation that not only allowed a Pune patient to breathe on his own again, but gave lives to six more ailing people in various cities. On Jan 1, the Pune patient underwent a lung transplant surgery at DPU Super Specialty Hospital. The organs were transferred to Pune from Jalna via a green corridor, allowing a transplant pathway to move forward under the authorised allocation process. The Jan 1 green corridor to Pune was a demanding and tightly managed movement given the New Year’s traffic. The transfer was carried out with strict police deployment and route control. The ambulance was flagged off with a salute by the police department as it proceeded towards Pune. The transfer was supported by the transplant and critical care doctors, who ensured protocol-based handling and clinical readiness at the receiving end. The operation required continuous on-ground coordination and swift clearances so that precious time was protected through the route and into the city.Coordinator of Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee Aarti Gokhale said, “The donor’s liver was also transplanted in a patient in Pune.”She further said, “The lung organ recipient was a male suffering from end-stage lung disease, namely interstitial lung disease (ILD). He was a resident of Mumbai and suffered from ILD for the last four years. Thanks to the smooth coordination between multiple authorities, the organs reached Pune from Jalna in 4.5 hours.”
