As the temple town marked the World Gita Paryaya celebrations, devotees gathered at the historic Shri Krishna Math for a moment that blended spirituality with rare craftsmanship. At the centre of it all was an extraordinary offering a Bhagavad Gita written on gold sheets, valued at nearly Rs 2 crore.
A rare gift finds its way to Udupi
The golden Bhagavad Gita was offered by Lakshminarayanan, a devotee from Delhi, who chose the sacred occasion of the World Gita Paryaya to make his dedication. The book was presented to the Shri Krishna Math during celebrations associated with the Puttige Math tradition.

A procession that turned heads across Udupi
To mark the dedication, a grand procession was organised through Ratha Beedi, the iconic Car Street that circles the temple.
The golden Bhagavad Gita was placed in a specially designed golden chariot and taken around the streets in a ceremonial shobhayatra. Devotees lined the road as the chariot moved slowly through the town, accompanied by chants, traditional music and religious rituals.
Senior and junior pontiffs of the Puttige Math led the procession. For Udupi residents, the sight of a sacred text crafted in gold being carried through familiar streets was both surreal and deeply moving.
Part of a larger spiritual mission
The offering of the golden Bhagavad Gita is closely linked to a larger spiritual initiative led by the Puttige Math.
The pontiff, Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji, has been spearheading the Koti Gita Lekhana Yajna, a campaign encouraging one crore people to write the Bhagavad Gita by hand. The movement aims to deepen personal engagement with the text rather than limit it to ceremonial reading.
As part of this mission, the golden Gita has been symbolically offered at the feet of Lord Krishna. The Swamiji described the moment as historic, saying the book would become a lasting spiritual and cultural attraction for devotees visiting the Math.
According to him, the offering represents not wealth, but dedication to preserving the timeless relevance of the Gita.
A museum space for a one of a kind scripture
Given its rarity and value, special arrangements have been made to preserve the golden Bhagavad Gita.
Temple authorities have prepared a dedicated display area within a museum space at the Krishna Math. The book will be housed in a high security glass enclosure that is both bulletproof and climate controlled, ensuring the gold pages remain protected from damage or theft.
Devotees will be able to view the book safely, making it accessible without compromising its preservation.
Officials said this is the first time such a golden version of the Bhagavad Gita has been formally dedicated to the Udupi Math, adding a unique chapter to the institution’s long spiritual history.
More than a symbol of wealth
While the Rs 2 crore value of the golden Gita has naturally caught public attention, temple leaders stress that its importance goes far beyond money.
In a place where scriptures are revered as living guides rather than artefacts, this offering stands as a powerful symbol of faith meeting craftsmanship. It reflects how ancient traditions continue to find new expressions in modern times.
For devotees visiting Udupi, the golden Bhagavad Gita will not just be something to admire behind glass. It will be a reminder that devotion does not always arrive quietly sometimes, it shines.
