Increased vigil, eye on offenders see crime rate fall in Pimpri Chinchwad

Pune: A strategic approach of identifying 1,045 crime-prone or sensitive spots and stepping up vigil in such areas, mapping of 1,585 criminals on record and keeping an eye on their activities and preventive as well as stringent action against organised crime syndicates largely contributed to a decline in overall crime across Pimpri Chinchwad, police said.“Our PC City app initiative that involved citizens in reporting and identifying sensitive spots particularly helped in reducing body offences as well as property crimes,” Pimpri Chinchwad commissioner of police Vinoy Kumar Choubey told reporters while releasing the 2025 annual crime data for the twin cities.Overall serious crimes, such as murder, attempted murder, rape, dacoity and robbery, dropped to 6,904 cases in 2025 as against 7,125 in 2024. A total of 301 rape and 392 molestation cases were registered last year. “In 299 rape and 376 molestation cases, the culprits involved were known to the survivors or their families. Of the total rape cases, 120 were of sexual exploitation on the promise of marriage. Nine of the molestations were committed by unkown persons and another seven involved use of social media platforms,” Choubey said. Preventive action against criminals on police records, special drives against illegal weapons, and detections proved effective in reducing heinous and street crimes. “We seized 243 country-made pistols by arresting 253 criminals and 908 sharp weapons from 1,066 criminals last year,” he said. Body offence cases went down to 1,087 last year from 1,183 in 2024, while property crimes dropped to 2,129 in 2025 from 2,474 the year before. “We focused our effort on putting an effective curb on organised crime syndicates. A total of 213 offenders from 45 such syndicates were booked under the stringent MCOCA provisions, while 368 others were externed and 35 were placed in preventive detention under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act,” the police chief said.Choubey noted there was also a decline in “professional offences”, such as burglaries, in 2025. “There is no witness for these offences. It required skill and effort to detect burglaries. These cases declined to to 285 last year from 311 in 2024,” the commissioner said.Choubey said the Pimpri Chinchwad police also started its own police hospital at Kaverinagar police colony in Wakad. The hospital provides medical facilities for police officials, police personnel, and their family members.“Also, construction of a new police commissioner office at Chikhali began, for which Rs 50 crore have already been received. We also planned a housing colony at Pimpri where 200 flats are being constructed for senior police officers and police personnel. A new Pimpri police station, along with the deputy commissioner of police (Zone-I) office, will be constructed there,” Choubey said. The commissioner said the police’s Traffic Buddy App and Jyesthanubandh App for senior citizens are getting a good response.
