Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch arrested a 24-year-old criminal on police records on the charge of selling mephentermine sulphate injection without a prescription.The police recovered 23 vials of the injections worth Rs 67,000 from the accused, Tejas Waydande, of Vetalnagar in Chinchwad. A crime branch team took Waydande into custody from Thergaon Phata recently on a tip-off. A case was registered under sections 278 (Sale of drug as a different drug or preparation), 123 (Causing hurt by means of poison) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) with the Wakad police.An officer from Wakad police said Waydande had 14 cases registered against him, including robberies and thefts.Assistant police inspector Ambarish Deshmukh of the Wakad police told TOI that mephentermine sulphate injection IP is used for low blood pressure patients. The sale of this injection without a prescription is prohibited. It has side-effects like drowsiness, incoherence, hallucinations, convulsions and a slow heart rate. “The injection is illegally being used by body builders to achieve better physical performance. Some people even used it to get high,” Deshmukh said.The officer said the investigations so far revealed that Waydande procured the vials of the injection from an e-commerce firm. He ordered it online and made the payments online. He identified the customers online and sold the injection. “Investigations so far revealed that the accused earlier too, ordered the injections and sold it. Our investigations are on,” the officer said.
