Pune: A 17-year-old youth from Khed taluka lost Rs 25,900 to two conmen when he went to a private bank’s ATM kiosk in Moshi to withdraw cash using his mother’s debit card on Wednesday night. The youth approached the Bhosari MIDC police on Thursday and lodged a complaint.
Investigating officer Digambar Asawale of the Bhosari MIDC police said the teenager went to the ATM kiosk on Wednesday night to withdraw cash from his mother’s bank account. There was already a person inside the kiosk. The youth’s debit card got stuck inside the cash-dispensing machine.“The youth noticed a helpline number on the wall in the kiosk. When he called that number, the person on the other end, who claimed to be the bank’s employee, assured help to the youth,” Asawale said. The officer said the ‘bank employee’ told the youth to enter the PIN in the machine. The youth entered the PIN while the person inside the kiosk stood behind the youth. He noticed the PIN number.Still, the cash was not dispensed. The person in the kiosk told the youth to enquire about it to a security guard from a neighbouring kiosk as the guard knew how to remove the debit card.“Believing him, the youth left his card in the machine and went out. Within a few seconds, the youth received a debit message of Rs 25,900 from his mother’s bank account. He rushed back to the kiosk and found that his debit card and the person were missing,” the officer said.Asawale said the youth immediately contacted the bank and transferred the remaining amount in his mother’s bank account to another bank account. “We will be getting CCTV footage at the kiosk from the bank. We registered a case of cheating against two people,” Asawale said.
