New Delhi: Delhi govt’s pollution-fighting arm, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), is set to get a modern headquarters in a major infrastructure boost to the city’s environmental governance. Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) and DPCC oon Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of the new facility, expected to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts across the capital.Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said it was a “major institutional initiative towards making Delhi pollution-free”.
“Under the MoU signed between DPCC and DSIIDC, a new state-of-the-art headquarters will be constructed in Rohini, which will provide our environmental conservation efforts with new technology and better monitoring,” added Sirsa.Established in 1991, DPCC is a regulatory body responsible for implementing central and state environmental laws in the capital. It plays a key role in combating air, water and noise pollution by issuing consent certificates and authorisations to industries and establishments, setting standards, compiling technical data, and enforcing compliance with environmental norms. The committee also conducts inspections, oversees hazardous waste management, and engages in public awareness and research programmes.Currently, DPCC operates from offices at Shastri Park and Kashmere Gate, from where the agency largely functions. It is currently facing an infrastructure crisis due to a lack of dedicated and adequate space in its headquarters.
