“The complainant is a housewife and stays with her husband in Pimpri. Her son-in-law, who stays in Nagpur, called the woman on Dec 21 and told her that he had sent a cheque worth Rs 5 lakh through a courier company and wanted her to deposit it in her bank.The woman received the cheque on Dec 24 and wanted to deposit it in her bank account in Shillong, Meghalaya,” an officer from the Sant Tukaramnagar police said.The woman searched for the bank’s contact number on the internet, and dialled the number mentioned online. The person who answered told her that a customer care official would assist her with the process online.“After some time, the woman received a call from an unknown cellphone number. The caller claimed that he was the bank manager and assured herthat the cheque could be deposited in the bank. The man then took the woman’s bank account and debit card details,” he said.The officer said later in the evening, the woman received a message from her bank stating Rs 4.5 lakh had been transferred from her account. Sensing foul play, she went to the bank’s branch in Pimpri and got her passbook printed. “She found that money was transferred to an unknown bank account. She lodged an online complaint and approached the police on Dec 29. We have sought the details of the transaction from the woman’s bank,” the officer said.
