Impounded RMC truck stolen from police custody

Pune: A ready-mix cement (RMC) truck which was impounded by the city traffic police department for violating traffic rule was stolen from the custody.For the last two days, the Swargate police have been searching for the truck.The RMC truck was impounded after it was plying on a restricted zone in city where movement of heavy vehicles was banned. The traffic police department registered an FIR with the Swargate police station for violating traffic rules and attempt to commit culpable homicide.The police impounded the vehicle and parked it on the road. The theft took place during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday near Panchami Hotel Chowk on Pune-Satara Road.The Swargate police had also put jammers on the tyres of the truck to keep it immovable.Senior inspector Yashwant Nikam of Swargate police said, “We registered a case of theft against unknown person(s). We suspect that the person who stole the truck used a duplicate key.”Nikam said, “Our team has been trying to locate the truck. Our team visited the owner’s place and parking area, but it was not there.”It is not the first time such a theft has taken place. About 2 years ago, the traffic police seized a car after its driver was found driving under the influence of alcohol at Koregaon Park. At the time, police applied jammers to it and left the spot. The next day, the car disappeared.In 2023, the Yerawada police had seized a private luxury bus for violating traffic rules. The bus, too, was taken away by its owner without informing the police. Police registered a theft complaint at the time.In such cases, the Pune city traffic police file FIRs against truck drivers and seize vehicles to reduce fatal accidents on city roads. In 2025, about 80 FIRs were registered against truck drivers for violating a range of traffic norms.
