New Delhi: Public Works Department aims to utilise this dry season to improve the stormwater drainage and overall drainage system across key stretches in the city. The focus is on locations that routinely bear the brunt of monsoon flooding due to heavy traffic, dense activity or natural low-lying terrain. Four major projects, costing over Rs 3.8 crore, have been planned for the 2025-26 financial year. One such project targets Savitri Cinema Road, where drainage improvements are proposed at multiple points between S and W blocks. This stretch functions as a key neighbourhood connector. During heavy rain, water accumulation often spills onto the carriageway, slowing traffic and damaging the road surface. With an allocation of Rs 65 lakh, the work aims to address both problems.
Another project focuses on the service lane from DJB Gate in Okhla Phase I to SLF Gate on SA Road. The area is lined with industrial units and service facilities, generating continuous movement of goods vehicles. Poor drainage frequently leads to overflowing water on the service lane, affecting access for workers and emergency vehicles. The Rs 67.2-lakh project will strengthen the drainage system and add structural support.Another upgrade has been planned near the LSR red light and in the vicinity of Blue Bells School, one of south Delhi’s most congested zones. Any waterlogging here quickly leads to traffic pile-ups and raises safety concerns for students and commuters. The Rs 96.6-lakh project involves widening, deepening and correcting the drain slope .The most expensive of these projects, costing nearly Rs 1.5 crore, involves repairing a damaged stormwater drain from the Shantivan red light service lane to the Vijay Ghat drain in central Delhi.
