New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Thursday opened Sadbhavana Park along Mahatma Gandhi Road to the public. It has been named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The park was inaugurated by lieutenant governor VK Saxena in June but was not opened to people as some work, including the walking track and lawn areas, was still being done. The facility has ticketed entry.
On the birth centenary of the former Prime Minister, the 11-acre park was named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sadbhavana Udyan by Saxena in the presence of chief minister Rekha Gupta.DDA officials said a statue or bust of Vajpayee will soon be installed. Work on a clock tower, which began in Aug, is still on. A food van facility, announced during the inauguration in June and planned near the parking area, is also not there yet.Running along the historic walled city, the park features lawns, marble pathways, shaded eating plazas, baradaris, sculpted fountains, toilets and open recreational zones. One of the key attractions is a striking sculpture of five white horses guided by a sarathi. The installation is encircled by a water body and fountains, adding to the park’s visual appeal. Four Yakshini sculptures by Padma Vibhushan awardee sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo have been installed.Officials said the park was conceptualised under the guidance of the lieutenant governor as part of a plan to decongest the Kartavya Path lawns. “It is part of a larger landscape redevelopment that includes three parks along Mahatma Gandhi Road. The aim is to create a vibrant urban hub where visitors can enjoy nature,” an official said.Kranti Udyan, the first park, was inaugurated in Jan. The overall scheme integrates a green belt spread across 35 acres, extending over a 1.7-km stretch along Ring Road.
