‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 review: Stylish but simplistic celebration of La Dolce Vita

Emily (Lily Collins) moves to Rome to be with her new love, Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini), and to run the Rome office of Agence Grateau. Marcello, heir to an exclusive Pashmina company based in a picture-postcard pretty village, Solitano leaves Emily with the uphill task of modernising the Muratori brand, and convincing his mother, Antonia (Anna Galiena), who runs the company, of the need for social media and a splashy presence.

One client does not justify an office in Rome, and so Emily’s boss, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), moves to Rome with Emily’s droll co-workers, Julien (Samuel Arnold) and Luc (Bruno Gouery) in tow. Agence Grateau is left in Geneviève’s (Thalia Besson) not-so-capable hands.

In Rome, Sylvie meets friends and lovers from her wild days in Italy including her professor and old flame, film director, Giancarlo (Raoul Bova) and Princess Jane (Minnie Driver) who has married into the Italian royal family. The princess is connected, though poor and promises introductions to the who’s who of the fashion world in Italy, for a fee.

Emily’s best friend, estranged heiress and songstress Mindy (Ashley Park), also comes to Rome for a dance competition, where sparks fly between her and Emily’s British banker ex-boyfriend, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount). Mindy gets an offer to play Satine in an animated version of Moulin Rouge. Though her relationship with Nico (Paul Forman) is over, he is desperately trying to get her back.

Hot chef and Emily’s off/on love interest, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), decides to take up a job offer that sees him travelling the world on a yacht cooking for a multi-millionaire who owns rockets.

A Fourth of July celebration at the American Embassy gives Emily a taste of home, thanks to Jake (Bryan Greenberg), who works there.

Sylvie’s love life is complicated as ever, with her husband, Laurent Grateau (Arnaud Binard), doing everything he can to get her back to Paris while also being involved in some shady deals. There is a young lover and a catching up with an old friend Yvette (Michèle Laroque), who Sylvie discovered once she gets on social media.

Work-wise, Emily seems to have lost her mojo in Rome but she gets it back and while the title in the first four episodes cross out Paris for Rome, from Episode 5, it remains Paris with a mention of Venice for the finale. A fashion show in Venice, where the models walk the ramp in rainboots thanks to the famous acqua alta and a proposal on a gondola up the romance and glamour quotient.

Everything is luxe as expected, with Emily meeting Gabriel at Gare du Nord as he boards Le Train Bleu — evoking Agatha Christie, a famous ruby, a secret assignation and a body in a compartment.

Emily’s clothes are lovely, echoing the glamour of Italian cinema from the 1950s and she rocks that bob. The printed jackets and pencil trousers, fitted skirts and eye-watering accessories including a ring she wears at a Pride parade are stunning. Mindy’s fashions continue to skate perilously close to bad taste but she pulls it off.

Gabriel’s postcard (a real one as Emily demands) at the finale hints at Emily going off to Greece in the next season, if there is one. Season 5 of Emily in Paris delivers on its promises — lovely clothes, people and locations. And sometimes that is enough.
