New Delhi: Tata Power DDL launched a ‘Solar Ambassador’ initiative on Tuesday to promote rooftop solar adoption. Under the programme, the power utility appointed 20 specially trained officials who will work at the community level to spread awareness and encourage households to switch to solar energy. The ambassadors will operate across northwest Delhi, covering nearly 1.5 million consumers in the utility area.“All ambassadors underwent specialised training in rooftop solar technologies and will guide residents on the benefits of solar installations, available govt schemes and the process of adoption. They will also act as a bridge between govt and consumers. The initiative aims to empower youth with green energy skills while supporting India’s clean energy transition, ” Tata Power said in a statement.The initiative was launched in Rohini, where key officials from the power department, including special secretary (power) Ravi Dadhich and senior TPDDL officials, were present.“Consumer interest in solar energy is steadily growing, with many households in the city choosing to self-finance installations while others are opting for bank loans. Solar is increasingly seen not just as a cost-saving measure but as a vital investment in sustainability and energy self-reliance,” said Dadhich.The rapid uptake of rooftop solar has been significantly driven by attractive incentives offered by the government. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers are eligible to receive a subsidy of Rs 30,000 per kilowatt for rooftop solar systems up to 2 kW. For systems between 2–3 kW, the same subsidy applies, with the total subsidy amount capped at Rs 78,000 for installations above 3 kW. In addition to financial support, the scheme also offers up to 300 units of free electricity per month generated from therooftopsystem.
