Pune: The Koregaon Park police have arrested a Belagavi-based housekeeping firm staffer (21) who allegedly prompted a Std X student (16) in Pune to die by suicide.Police identified the accused as Anil Shivappa Majare, who kept calling and harassing the student, her mother and brother by demanding Rs50,000 and threatening that he would release her photos on social networking sites.“We have seized Majare’s cellphone and have recovered data (images) from it. A further study of his social media profile is ongoing. We have given his cellphone to experts for digital forensic study,” senior inspector Sangita Jadhav of the Koregaon Park police said.On Nov 23, the girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house in the Koregaon Park when her family was away from home. Her father and brother are workers with a private company. Her mother, a housemaid, lodged a complaint with the police identifying the suspect with his first name and accusing him of abetting suicide of her daughter.Jadhav said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that Majare had already collected Rs8,000 from the girl, but he wanted more money. He kept on demanding amount ranging between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 from her mother and brother.”Investigations so far revealed that the girl and her mother had gone to Belgavi a few months ago to attend a wedding. Majare saw the girl there and started following her. He took out her details and sent a friend request on her social media. “She accepted it, and both of them started chatting. He then forced her to send him some pictures in a compromising position. The girl, without knowing the consequences, sent him her pictures,” Jadhav said. “We suspect that he also morphed some of her pictures,” the officer added.Jadhav said, “Based on the victim’s call data records, particularly the phone number used by the suspect for calling her and her family members, we identified Majare.” MSID:: 125959903 413 |
