Train thief who stole Rs 35 lakh jewellery arrested

Kalyan: The Railway Crime Branch apprehended a thief within 12 hours who had stolen diamond jewellery from an Indore businessman and his wife while they were travelling to a wedding in Lonavala on an express train.Police reports indicate that the accused, Mahesh Ghag, also known as Vicky, specialises in thefts from AC compartments of express trains. He has eight cases registered against him. The authorities had previously arrested him in February this year. After receiving bail in April, he resumed his criminal activities.The latest theft occurred on June 19 when Kantadevi Pudiya (75) and her husband Surechchandra, an Indore-based businessman, were travelling on the Daund Express from Indore to Lonavala. At Kalyan station, Vicky entered their AC compartment whilst they were asleep, took their bag, and fled.Upon discovering their missing bag, the victims filed a complaint with Kalyan GRP. The GRP Crime Branch team promptly began their investigation and reviewed CCTV footage, which showed the thief boarding at Kalyan station and departing with the stolen bag. Senior police inspector Vijay Khedekar of the GRP Crime Unit stated that the CCTV footage helped them identify the thief as a known offender. Subsequently, they assembled a team, located the accused in Chiplun, Ratnagiri, and recovered the stolen diamond jewellery.
