New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has suspended two students and barred one ex-student from the campus after a clash involving stone pelting on Nov 20. The confrontation, according to the disciplinary notices, involved two groups of students joined by ex-students and outsiders, which disrupted ongoing diploma examinations and damaged university property.The notices say that the incident occurred near the university polytechnic building and escalated quickly, leading to panic in the area. Stones were allegedly thrown and students were physically attacked while nearby classrooms and laboratories were functioning, forcing teaching and practical work to come to a halt. The incident was considered a serious breach of conduct.The action includes suspending one student from diploma in computer engineering programme and another from diploma in electrical engineering programme. Both have also been barred from entering the campus for two weeks. The barred ex-student is from the faculty of humanities and languages.The notices also name four other students — including another former student — as key conspirators. It remains unclear whether disciplinary action has been initiated against them.The charges listed in the notices include engaging in violence, stone pelting, causing disturbance during examinations, bringing outsiders into the campus for confrontation and damaging public property. The administration has warned that such conduct falls directly under punitive provisions that may lead to extended suspension or rustication.All three individuals have been asked to explain in writing by Dec 5 why stricter disciplinary action should not be taken. The notices state that if no reply is received within the deadline, the university will proceed ex parte,meaning further action will be taken without their defence. No official response was available from the university.
