Pune: The civic body is set to undertake major repairs on the 30-year-old water transmission line connecting Khadakwasla Dam to the Parvati water purification unit.Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has allocated Rs 57 crore for the relining project, which aims to curb water loss, prevent corrosion, and improve efficiency of water transport from the dam.Officials have assured residents that the work will be executed without disrupting the city’s water supply. An alternative transmission line is already functional, and as a precautionary measure, the administration plans to lift water from the Mutha canal during the repair period. Coordination with the irrigation department is underway to finalise the details of this backup arrangement.Work is slated to begin next month following the completion of administrative formalities. A senior official from the PMC’s water supply department stated, “The repair plan has been under consideration for a long time, and the tendering process was recently initiated. The project will be executed in phases — starting with the relining of the pipes, followed by the replacement of valves. Since this is a critical transmission line, we estimate the work will take approximately three months.“Sources within the PMC noted that while the administration had intended to repair the line last year, technical challenges caused the delay.Meanwhile, citizens have welcomed the infrastructure upgrade but urged the civic body not to overlook local issues. Residents pointed out that while transmission lines are being fixed, the administration must also address leakages in the distribution network, which continue to cause water wastage and low-pressure supply in many areas.
