New Delhi: In the wake of the car blast, major market associations in the city are stepping up their own security. From Sadar Bazaar to Sarojini Nagar, the associations are urging shopkeepers to install CCTV cameras, conduct thorough verification of new employees and tenants, and deploy private security guards wherever possible. The push for tighter, self-regulated vigilance comes amid growing concerns that these overcrowded markets remain vulnerable despite heightened police presence.At Sarojini Nagar’s Mini Market, the association is intensifying internal vigilance. “We are trying our best to be watchful by installing more cameras in our shops. We are removing dustbins from outside our shops so that people can’t put hazardous items into them,” president Ashok Randhawa, said.Rakesh Yadav, president of Federation of Sadar Bazaar Traders’ Association, said circulars have been issued asking shopkeepers to complete police verification of all staffers and ensure CCTV cameras remain functional round the clock. “We have requested businessmen to gauge the security status in their respective areas and prepare a ground report, which the association can share with police,” he said.Murli Mani, president of Karol Bagh’s Vyapar Mandal Ajmal Khan Road, said this fear is not new. “A blast hit Ghaffar Market in 2008. Nobody is willing to risk it again,” he said. However, some say that while internal vigilance is crucial, the larger responsibility lies with the authorities.
