Court acquits man, his son in 2020 northeast Delhi riots case

New Delhi: A court has acquitted a father and son accused in a case related to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Pointing out that none of the prosecution witnesses identified any of the accused as being part of the mob that had committed arson and rioting across several properties, additional sessions judge Parveen Singh acquitted them on Oct 31.The court was hearing the case against Mithhan Singh and his son Jony Kumar, who were accused of various penal offences, including unlawful assembly, rioting, robbery and arson. It, however, convicted Kumar under IPC 188 for violating prohibitory orders, stating it was established that he was standing with a mob and raising slogans. The prosecution claimed that both were part of a riotous mob that looted and vandalised a shop in Khajuri Khas Extension.
