Mumbai: Thane Municipal Corporation to increase maternity beds to 90 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital

Thane: Considering the rising number of women coming for deliveries at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital (CSMH) in Thane, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has increased the number of maternity beds to 90.TMC commissioner Saurabh Rao also directed that the maternity home at Mumbra’s Hakim Ajmal Khan Hospital in the MM Valley area be designated as an extended centre of CSMH, with a fully functional and upgraded obstetrics department to be started there soon. The CSMH maternity unit currently handles around 200 outpatients daily and conducts an average of 18 deliveries every day, with the number reaching 22 in Oct. Despite having 70 postnatal beds, the ward frequently accommodates nearly 98 women, as patients arrive from Thane city, nearby rural areas of Thane district as well as even the Palghar district, said a civic official.During a review meeting on Friday, officials noted that around 100 women from the Mumbra facility are referred to CSMH every month. To ease the load, commissioner Rao instructed that emergency caesarean facilities and essential manpower be arranged at the Mumbra maternity unit immediately and the upgraded centre be made operational on priority, the official added.
