Pune: A 38-year-old man died after being run over by an SUV while he was sleeping on the road under the Karvenagar flyover around 4pm on Tuesday. The Warje police have identified the deceased, a resident of Karvenagar. He worked as a mechanic in an automobile garage. The police also identified the SUV driver — a shopkeeper (35) from Shurakwar Peth. The deceased was married and had three children. His brother (42), who runs a small construction business in the city, lodged a complaint with the police.Inspector Nilesh Badak of the Warje police said, “We recorded a detailed statement of the brother of the deceased and then registered the case against the SUV driver.” The police said there was no footpath along the road. According to the police, the deceased would consume alcohol after completing his day’s work. On Tuesday, he consumed liquor in the afternoon and fell asleep on the road.“The shopkeeper came to the area in his SUV to meet someone in a residential building adjacent to the spot where the deceased was sleeping. While entering the society, he ran over the man sleeping on the road. We suspect that while negotiating the left turn towards the society, the SUV driver overlooked the person sleeping on the road. The driver should have remained more careful,” Badak said. The police have served a notice to the SUV driver.
