Thane: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) awarded a compensation of Rs 25.78 lakh to the family of a 40-year-old fabrication supervisor who was killed by a speeding truck in Nov 2020. The victim was riding his motorcycle from Ambernath when a truck struck him from behind near Nagzari village in Panvel. He succumbed to grievous stomach injuries the same day at a hospital in Kamothe. Presiding over the case, member R.V. Mohite held the truck driver solely responsible, noting the vehicle was driven in a “rash and negligent manner” at high speed. The family had initially claimed a compensation of Rs 1 crore. The total award includes Rs 18.9 lakh for the loss of future income and Rs 4.72 lakh for future prospects. The deceased is survived by his 37-year-old wife, three children, and his elderly parents.Taloja police filed a charge sheet against the truck driver. The MACT directed the truck owner and the insurance company to jointly pay the compensation along with a 9% annual interest from the date the petition was filed. The widow will receive the largest share of Rs 9.78 lakh, while the children and parents will get Rs 4 lakh and Rs 2 lakh each, respectively. A portion of the awarded amount has been directed to be invested in fixed deposits for three years.
