55-year-old shot by acquaintance in Mumbai's Malad East

MUMBAI: A 55-year-old man was injured after being shot by his acquaintance in Malad East early Sunday. Abtullah Baig, the victim, was rushed to the hospital and is currently recuperating. The incident occurred around 5:30 am at Obaid Compound in Sanjay Nagar, Malad East. Baig and his acquaintance were seated in the compound when the latter fired a shot near Baig’s ear with a pistol. The accused then fled. Baig’s family rushed him to DNA Hospital in the vicinity, after which he was moved to JJ Hospital. He sustained an injury under his ear and is receiving treatment. Police recovered an empty cartridge at the scene. The motive for the shooting is still unclear. Officials said Baig and his acquaintance had spent the night together and had consumed alcohol. Police are investigating whether a dispute arose between the two. CCTV footage captured a single assailant, but authorities will investigate whether he had any accomplices. Baig has known the accused for the past two decades, police said. Baig’s condition is stable. Police will register an FIR under ‘attempt to commit murder.’
