The dramatic case of betrayal unfolded when the victim miraculously survived by clinging to a cement pillar of Kasheli bridge until locals and police rescued him.The victim, a leather bag salesman from Wangani in Thane, met the woman in 2008. She was then married. After she left her husband due to marital problems, they began a relationship, moved in together, and got married in 2012. They had a son in 2016.A few years later, she got into a relationship with another man in the neighbourhood. Upon learning this, the man confronted his wife. When she admitted to the extra-marital affair, he moved out. But what began as domestic discord spiralled into a deadly plot, said a police officer.On Sunday, she called him home. When he reached her Thane residence, he was ambushed by her lover and two accomplices. After taunting him for “not taking care of her”, they beat him up, and dragged him into an autorickshaw. “He was taken to Mumbra, where the assault continued. At one point, the lover allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened to kill him,” said the police officer.During the beating, a phone call came in. The victim told police that on speakerphone, he heard his wife say: “Kill him and finish it off, he should not come back.” The attackers drove the victim to Kharegaon Creek bridge, where they hurled him into the waters. “Your place has arrived,” one of them declared before pushing him over.By sheer luck, the man clutched a pillar of Kasheli bridge and screamed for help. Locals rushed to the spot and alerted police, who pulled him out with ropes in a late-night rescue. The victim was treated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital. Police said that when the victim confronted his wife after the incident, she said: “How did you survive? You don’t even know how to swim.”Following his complaint, police registered a case against the woman, her paramour, and the two unidentified aides for attempted murder, abduction, and criminal conspiracy.
