Mumbai: The BMC is planning to build a 4.2km flyover along the traffic congestion-prone LBS Marg from Kalpana Talkies in Kurla West to Pankhe Shah Baba Dargah in Ghatkopar West.There are three major junctions along this stretch — Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, Ghatkopar station road, and Sant Narsi Mehta Road junctions — which witness regular traffic congestion, said civic officials. Besides, there are several cross-roads along LBS Marg.“BMC plans to build a four-lane, two-way flyover, considering the congestion witnessed at junctions such as the Shreyas junction, which is on Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, the junction near Sarvodaya Hospital, and the junction opposite the BMC yard at Sant Narsi Mehta Road. Besides, there are a number of small junctions and crossroads along LBS Marg. Constructing a flyover will help reduce this congestion,” said a civic official.The VJTI is expected to provide the drawings and the methodology to be adopted for the construction, including aspects such as the height. “The flyover’s design may not be simple; it will take into account ongoing infrastructure works on the stretch, including the bridge being constructed by the MRIDC connecting Ghatkopar east and west and the Metro line near Sarvodaya Hospital. The flyover will have to go to the second level; that is above the Metro line. All these aspects will have to be worked out, and we are at the planning stage,” said the official.Lauding the plan to decongest LBS Marg, activist Anil Galgali said, “There are a few congestion spots such as near Phoenix Marketcity mall, Kurla Depot, Sarvodaya Hospital, and Shreyas signal. When there is traffic congestion on LBS Marg, motorists move to Eastern Express Highway causing snarls there too. This flyover will help motorists heading north to access Eastern Express Highway via Vikhroli ROB as well as those heading towards Powai, JVLR, and the western suburbs.“
