New Delhi: In April 2015, Shahnawaz was brutally killed in a road rage incident in front of his two sons in central Delhi’s Daryaganj. Nearly a decade later, on Sept 12, the Tis Hazari Court sentenced four individuals to life imprisonment for his murder—delivering long-awaited justice to his grieving family.Tragically, ACP Amrit Raj, the officer who led the investigation with unwavering dedication, passed away from a heart attack just two days before the verdict was delivered. He did not live to see the justice he worked tirelessly to achieve. The incident occurred late at night when Shahnawaz was returning home with his children from his parents’ residence on Asaf Ali Road. Around 11.30pm, his motorcycle accidentally brushed against a car driven by Mohammad Waseem, a local property dealer. A minor collision soon escalated into a heated argument near the Dargah, at Turkman Gate. Waseem, along with his associates, then reportedly assaulted Shahnawaz in front of his children. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder and common intention. The investigation was entrusted to the then inspector Amrit Raj, posted at Daryaganj Police Station. Over the years, he meticulously built the case—gathering evidence, examining witnesses and pursuing every lead with diligence. Five men were eventually arrested: Mohammad Waseem alias Bhura, Mohammad Shadab, Mohammad Atif Malik, Salahuddin and Sheikh Ameenuddin. During the trial, Ameenuddin passed away, leading to the abatement of proceedings against him. Following a prolonged legal battle, the court convicted the remaining four and sentenced them to life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 5,000 each. Deputy commissioner of police (Central) Nidhin Valsan praised ACP Raj’s efforts, stating: “He pursued the case with determination and integrity despite numerous challenges.” Another senior officer noted that Raj’s professional integrity, commitment to justice and perseverance represented the highest standards of policing. “Future investigators can draw from his legacy. His diligence, patience and resolve are cornerstones ofeffective law enforcement and enduring justice,” the officer added. The case has also been recommended under the Delhi Victim Compensation Scheme, 2018, to provide financial assistance and support to Shahnawaz’s family in the aftermath of their loss.
