Mumbai: The appointment of a headmaster at a city-based minority educational institute has sparked a dispute over whether the govt should have a role in such decisions. Critics say the requirement of departmental approval amounts to interference in the community’s right to manage its own institutions.“The govt has no right to interfere in the management of an institute or the appointment of its head,” said Shriprakash Dixit, vice-president of the Mumbai Junior College Teachers’ Union (MJCTU). Traditionally, deputy directors of education in the Mumbai zone have kept oversight on such appointments. Dixit alleged this has led to overreach, citing a previous deputy director who was suspended for misuse of powers. — Mahiyar Patel
