Pune: The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has appointed observers for 32 engineering colleges in the city after receiving complaints from students and parents regarding the flouting of admission rules.After the regular rounds for first-year engineering admissions conducted by the CET cell ended, complaints surfaced that admissions to vacant seats in colleges, especially those under the management quota, were being carried out without following the set norms.These observers are required to submit a detailed report on the admission process to the DTE. The DTE also appealed to the students and parents to inform the inspectors if they face injustice during the admission process.Deputy joint director (in-charge), Maruti Jadhav, said, “The institute-level admission process for the academic year 2025–26 for undergraduate engineering (B.E/B.Tech) courses is being conducted from Sept 8 to 15. As per the list of institutions, observers have been appointed to monitor whether the said process is being carried out transparently and strictly on the basis of merit, in accordance with Rule No. 13 of the Admission Information Brochure for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions for this academic year published by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Mumbai.”According to the DTE, since all four rounds of Common Admission Procedure (CAP) are complete, colleges must strictly follow the rules mentioned in clauses 13 and 15 of the admission information brochure for admissions to vacant CAP, as well as management quota seats.Kalpesh Yadav, joint secretary, Yuva Sena, Maharashtra, said, “It was found that some college administrations were blatantly violating these rules, charging large sums of money, and giving admissions to students from affluent families.”Yadav submitted evidence to the DTE regarding this matter.Acting on the complaints, the DTE administration decided to appoint observers. Colleges from the Pune and Nagpur regions are included in this move.Dr Dattatray Jadhav, joint director, Pune division and Dr Manoj Daigavane, joint director of Nagpur division, issued circulars directing that the admission reports, along with the required documents, must be submitted to the office.“Observers are required to be physically present during institute-level admissions in engineering colleges. They must verify whether admissions are granted as per clause 13 of the admission information brochure. A detailed report of the entire process, along with supporting documents, must be submitted to the office by Sept 16.”
