Yamuna Level Down, But Many Families Scared To Return Yet

New Delhi: The Yamuna level receded further on Wednesday, however, about 7,000 people remained in relief camps as many low-lying areas of the city were still under water. The level at 8 am was 204.75m, which dipped to 204.63m by 8 pm, well above warning levels. It may drop to 204.5m by Thursday morning.Officials said that while the situation improved in central and some parts of north Delhi, some parts of the floodplain in east Delhi were still under water. “Most of these displaced people are working as domestic help, daily wagers, rickshaw pullers, etc. Earlier, they would go to work from their settlements; now they are going to work from the camps. About 7,000 people are still in the camps. In east Delhi, the situation is yet to be normalised and it will take some more time for the water to recede,” said district magistrate (East) Amol Srivastava. The water being discharged from the Hathnikund barrage remained below 50,000 cusecs. Officials further said that their priority was to ensure that vector and water-borne diseases do not impact the camps.
