Who really is an idiot, and who gets to decide? This provocative question takes centre stage in An Idiot for Dinner, the upcoming play by Boardwalkers in the city. Blending comedy with satire, the production comes with a supper theatre twist — audiences can enjoy a lavish buffet alongside the performance.

Directed by Michael Muthu, the play is a stage adaptation of the 1998 French movie, Le Diner de Con’s. The play tells the story of Sanjay Kelavkar, who, along with a group of friends, invites Idiots for dinner every month. Each of the friends has to bring an idiot for that special dinner, and the person who brings the biggest idiot is the winner of the evening, and wins a hige sum of money.

The play begins with Sanjay, who is desperately on the lookout for the perfect idiot. With the help of a few friends, he chances upon Golden Gopu, an avid matchstick model maker, who loves constructing detailed sculptures with matchsticks, and probably the biggest idiot ever to be invited for the game.

Actor Sarvesh Sridhar, who plays the role of Golden Gopu, shares his experience of working with the character, “Having played this role numerous times before, I am deeply familiar with the character. But as I have grown and matured over the years, my character too has evolved with me. Through the course of the play, the audience will discover that Golden Gopu, often dismissed as the biggest fool, is in fact the kindest soul. To me, it’s also a reminder of how quickly we judge people and label them an idiot.”

Sanjay is delighted because he is certain that he is going to win. In the meantime, Golden Gopu arrives at Sanjay’s residence, and the evening slowly disintegrates into complete disaster, with Sanjay, the architect of the evening, brought down to his humble knees by the bumbling Idiot.

“It is one of the first ever supper theatre experiences in this part of Chennai. Though East Coast Road, ECR has always been a very happening place with a lot of parties and political rallies, they have never had the theatre aspect covered. At this event, we will be opening up the door for the audience to come and experience something new. The concept of supper theatre pairs up entertainment, food and a space to connect with like-minded people as the play ends with a buffet that will be served after the show,” says Sharon Sophia, Senior Sales coordinator at VGP Heritage Resort.

On September 6 and 7 at Pandian Hall, VGP Heritage. Tickets ₹1,999 per person (includes entry, snacks, and buffet dinner), for tickets call 7550036697.
