Ruckus in press conference over Assam tribunal report

New Delhi: A ruckus broke out during a press conference at the Constitution Club on Tuesday. The event, organised to release a report on the People’s Tribunal on Assam: Evictions, Detentions, and the Right to Belong, was disrupted when two groups — one from Hindu Sena and another from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh — stormed in carrying placards and raising slogans.Attendees said the disruptors invaded the speaker’s hall within the high-security club, attempting to interrupt the proceedings. After about half an hour, the groups left, many leaving their placards behind. The programme then resumed as planned. On stage at the time were activist Harsh Mander, former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed, former Union home secretary HD Pillai, and others. Chaudhary Parvez Alam, a member of one of the groups, said they came to boycott the event. “Govt is doing the right thing by sending back illegal Bangladeshi migrants. About 100 of us came,” he added. Vishnu Gupta from Hindu Sena expressed similar views.Police said that no complaint was filed. “A team was dispatched, but the individuals had left. No one was detained,” police said.
