Pune: Heritage walks this Ganesh festival are drawing residents and tourists alike to explore the city’s deep-rooted connection with the deity.From tracing the origins of the revered Manache Ganapati to uncovering stories of freedom fighters and reformers who shaped Pune’s Ganeshotsav, these guided walks weave together history, culture and tradition.“I moved to Pune earlier this year, and it would be interesting to see the rich culture and the stories that shape the festival,” said Sandeep Mehta, a resident of Baner.This year, several heritage walk companies are also focusing on visiting temples other than the Manache Paach Ganapati and the popular ones.Architect Nishigandha Sakhardande, director and lead heritage expert at Travia Outdoors, said, “We will be visiting the unique Trishund Ganapati Temple in Somwar Peth and Gundacha Ganapati in Kasba Peth, among others. It is a three-hour walk covering 9-10 Ganapati temples.”Participants not only witness century-old mandals and intricately crafted idols but also get a glimpse of how the festival evolved from private household rituals to a community celebration.“The format of the walk has been much appreciated. We will also take a break for local snacks and ukdiche modak en route,” said Payal Durve, coordinator for The Western Routes, which will conduct walks throughout the festival from Aug 28 to Sept 5.Koustubh Vanarase, who curates heritage walks in the city, will conduct a special heritage walk during the festival.“We will cover Manache Ganapati, along with other temples withhistorical importance. Walks will be conducted with corporates, expats and NRIs, as well as larger community walks,” said Vanarase.Mathias Muller, a resident of Germany, has signed up for one of these heritage walks. “I am going to be in India around the time of the festival. It would be good to understand the historical importance surrounding the idols. I would also love to see the decorations of the pandals and the creativity involved,” he said.
