New Delhi: A 27-year-old man has been apprehended for allegedly running a job scam that targeted advocates and highly educated women by impersonating govt officials and promising them posts in govt departments.Police said the accused had detailed information about job roles in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and various Delhi govt departments. He researched department heads online and either impersonated them or claimed close ties to lure victims.The scam surfaced after a woman from Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara, filed a complaint on the NCRP portal, alleging she was duped of Rs 23,110 with the promise of a job in the education department.The woman said she got lured into the scam when she received a referral from a female advocate, directing her to a man who claimed to provide govt jobs, supported by what appeared to be a legitimate profile.On June 10, the victim allegedly received messages and emails offering her the position of co-head in the Women’s Commission. The next day, she got an official-looking message from the education department and an email requesting a Rs 5,260 processing fee.“Later that day, she received another email confirming her registration under the Member of Parliament quota, along with a registration number,” said a senior police officer.She was later allegedly told she had been shortlisted among 15 candidates and asked to pay additional amounts—Rs 12,500 and Rs 5,350—for further processing. When she could no longer contact the accused after making the payments, she filed a complaint on June 12.An FIR was registered under Sections 318 (cheating) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Shahdara Cyber Police Station on Aug 18. A special team began the investigation.DCP (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said the money was traced to a bank account held by Sagar Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad, UP. The same person was linked to the mobile number and email used in the scam.Further inquiry revealed the female advocate’s profile had been hacked. She too was duped of Rs 3.34 lakh, promised the post of chairperson in the Women’s Commission.The accused, a habitual offender, was tracked and apprehended.
